Xeomin Treatment

Xeomin can be used for both cosmetic and therapeutic reasons. Xeomin Cosmetic was approved by Health Canada in 2009 and has been a popular alternative to Botox.

What is Xeomin?

Xeomin is another injectable offered at Burlington Medical Aesthetics that is similar to Botox and Dysport. Xeomin Cosmetic is a neuromodulator used to block muscle movement in areas experiencing wrinkle formation. It contains the same core toxin as the others, called botulinum, but because it undergoes an extra step of purification there are no complexing proteins. This means, unlike Botox or Dysport, the body is less likely to become immune to its effects over prolonged usage.

This isn’t to imply that Xeomin is better than Botox or Dysport either, because all are administered the same way, offering the same results, lasting the same amount of time. Plus, not everyone experiences such immunities. What it does mean, though, is that Xeomin has become a great alternative if the effects of Botox or Dysport are no longer meeting your desired results.

How does Xeomin work?

With a small needle, Xeomin is injected into the target muscle, and depending on the procedure, these injections can take between five and 30 minutes to complete. Expect the full effect of your Xeomin treatment to be visible between one to two weeks post-treatment. There is minor discomfort during the procedure and little healing time post-procedure.

Xeomin treatments typically last four to six months for cosmetic purposes.

What’s the difference between Xeomin & Dysport?

The two brands of neuromodulators offered at Burlington Medical Aesthetics are Xeomin and Dysport. At Burlington Medical Aesthetics, we will recommend the right brand for you depending on the purpose of your treatment.

One of the main differences amongst these brands is that Xeomin® is considered a “negative injectable.” Unlike Dysport, Xeomin® does not contain any additives, so the body is less likely to become resistant to it.

Xeomin FAQs

What areas are commonly treated by Xeomin?

Xeomin treatment is a common cosmetic procedure that can be applied to various areas of the body. The 3 most common sites people target with Xeomin Cosmetic are:

  1. Severe to moderate vertical frown lines
  2. Crow’s feet
  3. Forehead lines

What is the standard procedure like?

When undergoing Xeomin treatment, the patient is placed on an exam table, usually in a sitting or upright position. Treatment areas are then cleaned with a non-alcoholic solution to maintain sterility. Occasionally, topical anesthetics are applied to the target areas. To prevent bleeding or bruising, the physician will often apply pressure around the target site as the injection is administered. The amount/type of wrinkles determines how many injections are made.

Is Xeomin treatment painful?

Xeomin treatment is an injection administered using a small needle. As such, there is potential for a minor amount of discomfort. However, injection sites are sometimes prepped by way of anesthetic creams or ice packs before the procedure. This added step greatly reduces any pain or discomfort one might experience from the injection.

How long is the average session?

Xeomin treatment sessions vary from patient to patient, but typically last between five and 30 minutes.

How safe is Xeomin® treatment?

Xeomin uses botulinum toxin type A, which can be harmful. However, the small doses found in cosmetic Xeomin® treatment are generally considered safe by the medical community, and was approved for cosmetic use by the Health Canada in 2009.

As with any medically prescribed substance, it is important to discuss any concerns you may have with a trained health practitioner.

What are the main benefits of Xeomin?

The main benefit to Xeomin Cosmetic treatment is that it reduces the appearance of wrinkles.

Some therapeutic applications for Xeomin include treating chronic sialorreah (long-lasting drooling), muscle stiffness due to upper limb spasticity and cervical dystonia (neck muscle disorder).

How quickly can I see results?

The effects of Xeomin Cosmetic is usually noticeable between one and two weeks.

Should I expect any side effects?

Any medical procedure has risks. It’s important that you consult with your family doctor and/or a trained dermatologist to assess any potential risks considering your own medical history.

What should I expect in terms of recovery time?

In general, there is very little, if any, recovery time associated with a standard Xeomin injection.

How often should appointments be booked?

Xeomin treatment is a temporary solution that lasts approximately four to six months. As effects wear off and depending on user physiology, we recommend that you consult with our beauty care specialists to determine when another injection should be considered.

How much per procedure?

Burlington Medical Aesthetics provides cosmetic and therapeutic Xeomin treatments that are offered at comparable price points. For more information on pricing and payment options, contact our beauty care specialists today.
